Kuala Lumpur is one of the Asia's hottest foodie destinations. Singapore might just hold the title of being the number one, but the colourful, exotic capital of Malaysia is fast catching up. This is plainly evident to people who know both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. And those who do, will be delighted that ilLido, one of Singapore's most revered and simply phenomenal eateries, has just opened its flagship Kuala Lumpur branch.

ilLido's alluring brand of rarefied gastronomical delights mixed with the ultra-luxe design has been brought to life in KL. The concept, design and pretty much entire imagining of ilLido is down to celebrated figure of Hong Kong and Singapore dining scene, Beppe de Vito. His is a name well known and respected among the inner-circle of Asia's discerning gourmets and food critics. His efforts include the much loved and perennially praised FORLINO and, naturally, the award-winning ilLido in Singapore. ilLido Italian Dining & Lounge Bar is his newest creation and offers the lucky gourmets of Kuala Lumpur something which he hopes will change the city's ethos of fine dining and pave the way for an exciting culinary future which steals away more than a few bon vivants who might previously have chosen Singapore for their epicurean adventures.

The art of Italian fine dining is not an easy one. Too often are regional Italian dishes misrepresented by the slew of eateries parading as authentic. But, as any true foodie knows, the rewards and miracles of regional Italy's best recipes are something in a realm of their own. Taking its name from the Lido Island in Venice, the idea behind ilLido is to afford guests with the same kind of leisurely approach to luxurious living for which the island is famed. And wining and dining at leisure is certainly what the well-attired and au fait will be able to do when they venture to de Vito's new marvel of modern Italian gastronomy on Jalan Mayang, which is just off Jalan Yap Kwan Seng.

The contemporary design of both the restaurant and the lounge speaks of the most sensuous and tasteful approach to good living. Expect such lustrous additions as Philippe Starck chairs and other functional art-pieces which celebrate the lineaments of sophisticated dining. The design, as appealing, chic and considered as it may be, is merely the binding of an establishment which brings the best of regional Italian cookery to Kuala Lumpur Restaurants. Amidst the restaurant and bar, brought to life in light and texture with chrome, gold, black and grey, guests will find space for around 270 persons, although the seats number 170. Beppe de Vito has entrusted the treasured task of bringing his culinary vision to life to the capable hands of Chef Samuele Alvisi.

A native Italian, this rising star of culinary brilliance has sharpened his knife in some of the most revered kitchens and hotels in Milan, the United Kingdom, Dubai, Beijing and Singapore. His specific approach to cookery is one of reverence for authentic regional cookery, while bringing a healthy nuance of freshness to every dish. Don't go to ilLido expecting the tried and tested, but rather what a master chef can do with the finest ingredients, many of which are imported directly from Italy. Try dishes of legend like Breaded Veal Chop with Marinated Tomatoes, Roasted Suckling Pig with Plum Sauce and Red Snapper Fillet with Braised Fennel, Vanilla and 'Taggiasche' Olives. Homemade pastas are just one of the kitchen's special offerings. Try these artisanal pastas in dishes like Pappardelle with Goose Liver, Duck Confit and Truffle Sauce, Capellini with Squid Ink Tonnarelli with Spicy Crab and Tarragon Foam or even the delicious Champagne Risotto with Truffle.
The bar is ideal for either a pre-dinner or post-dinner drink, especially if you are tempted to indulge in fine wines. The wine cellar will give you a clue as to the seriousness with which every sip is taken at il-Lido. Expect the finest from both the New and Old World wineries, with a special focus on Old World Italian estates and those equally splendid bottles from France's Bordeaux and Burgundy regions.
The indoor dining room seats 60 in the main area, and 15 and 8 in the two private spaces respectively, but those who are looking for a slightly different experience, one which leans towards the casual, might enjoy the alfresco bar with unrivalled views of the cityscape. Fine wines can be enjoyed by the glass, perhaps to accompany not only the languorous ambiance and the spectacular backdrop of the KLCC and KL tower, but also the tasty temptations which constitute the gourmet bar-snacks menu.
From the delights of home-cured cheeses, not to be missed, to the unyielding sense of contemporary design brilliance, ilLido has all the charms and magic of a true flagship restaurant, one which looks set to raise the bar, so to speak, for those who try to follow.
